What this app is — and isn't

HGV Defect Checker ("Drive it or park it?") is a guidance tool. It presents information from DVSA's published Categorisation of Vehicle Defects (December 2024 edition) and related enforcement guidance, reproduced under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Crown copyright acknowledged.

It is not legal advice, and it does not replace your own judgement, your operator's procedures, or a qualified assessment. Enforcement decisions are always the examiner's on the day; penalties shown are typical ranges, not quotes. Guidance changes — we refresh against DVSA publications, but the current official documents always take precedence.

The golden rule: if a defect is borderline, park it, record it on a defect report, and get it assessed before the vehicle is used. No verdict in this app authorises anyone to drive a vehicle.

Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we accept no liability for losses arising from reliance on the app's output — including prohibitions, fixed penalties, prosecutions, or vehicle damage. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Purchases

Full access (one-off) unlocks the defect checker on your devices, including future updates to it.
Pro (monthly) adds photo checks and renews monthly until cancelled — cancel any time from your Gumroad receipt email, effective at the end of the paid period.
Payments, receipts, VAT and refunds are handled by Gumroad, our merchant of record. If something's wrong with a purchase, reply to your receipt email.

Privacy

The defect checker runs in your browser. Your selections aren't sent anywhere.
When you activate a licence key, the key alone is checked against our licence server. Buying doesn't give us your name or address — Gumroad holds your purchase record under their privacy policy.
Pro photo checks: photos are analysed to suggest matching defects and are not stored — they're discarded after the check.
No advertising, no tracking cookies. A small piece of local storage remembers your unlock status on your device.

If you give us your email

The only personal data we hold is an email address you've deliberately typed in to ask for the roadside defect card. Specifically:

What we store: your email address, the date you asked, and which page you asked from. Nothing else — no name, no company, no tracking profile.
Why: so we can occasionally send you a short briefing when the defect rules or guidance change. Nothing else, ever. (The defect card itself downloads immediately — you don't need to wait on an email for it.)
Lawful basis: your consent, given by typing your address and pressing the button. You can withdraw it at any time.
Unsubscribing: every email has a one-click unsubscribe. You can also ask us to delete your address entirely and we'll do it — see Contact below.
Your rights: under UK GDPR you can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to erase it. Because we hold only an email address, all three take about a minute.
We never sell, share, rent or trade the list, and we don't use it for anything but the card and the briefing.
